Building a Sense of Community in Our Students - "This is My Place"
For the third year in a row we have used an "Open House" format for our second Conferences of the year. We found that our second conferences of the year are typically student-led conferences, so we decided three years ago to provide a set time for all of our conferences to happen and call it an Open House. As a staff, and judging by the overwhelmingly positive feedback we have received from parents, we feel this has been a huge success. It provides our community the opportunity to come to the school and celebrate the learning taking place at Tait. We have also been abe to use the Open House each year to help communicate our School Story.
The focus this year was "This is My Place", a continuation of connecting students to their community. Each student completed a framed picture of their "Place" in the community and why it is important to them. While each class looked at this through a slightly different lens, it provided every student to opportunity to think critically about what makes them happy, and therefore, contributes to their learning. When the parents and families came to the school, every student was able to proudly share their understanding of their place in our community. It also eneabled parents to see the variety of ways our students chose to display their learning.
