Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics - Staff Professional Development Part 2
Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics Staff Professional Development - Part 2
On the afternoon of Friday, February 14th, 2025, Robert J. Tait Staff engaged in Professional Development using the book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, by Simon Fraser University Professor of Education, Peter Liljedahl. In his book, Professor Liljedahl shares 14 Teaching Practices that can create conditions for student thinking - students thinking more deeply and in longer duration in math activities. The Teaching Practices that Tait Staff focused on through this afternoon were:
How We Arrange the Furniture in a Thinking Classroom
How We Answer Student Questions in a Thinking Classroom
When, Where, and How Tasks are Given in a Thinking Classroom
Following this Professional Development afternoon, teachers took some of the ideas shared back to their classrooms to be used with their students, and to help create lessons and activities that could be used to deepen the thinking for their students when they engaged in mathematics.
