Creating 'Thinking Classrooms' in Mathematics Lessons

In classrooms through the 2024-2025 school year, classroom teachers have incorporated strategies learned from our study of the teaching resource, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, by Simon Fraser University Professor of Education, Peter Liljedahl.

Anecdotal Evidence collected by teachers describes students being more active and engaged, visually showing and verbally sharing their learning with each other in groups. Students are better able to describe their thinking and explain their learning when they are standing, moving, sharing and collaborating in small groups. Students work on vertical surfaces (whiteboards, classroom slider doors, and dry erase whiteboard sheets that can be placed around the room. Students work in groups of 3 and are encouraged to work together sharing roles of being the scriber and observer while sharing their thinking.
