2024/25 Focus

2024-2025 - Numeracy Year 5 (Thinking Classroom Numeracy Activities)

We continue to focus on students learning and using different computational strategies and routines. Throughout the 2024/2025 school year classes will continue to learn and use a different strategy for a month at a time from the math resource 'High Yield Routines for Grades K-8'. Focus on these High Yield Routines across all grade levels produces a consistency of language as students move through each grade level in the coming school years.

This year, the Tait Staff is learning from a new Math teaching resource called 'Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics' by author Peter Liljedahl. Professor Liljedahl has researched for more than 15 years how to construct math lessons and activities that are engaging and require students to be actively thinking. His resource shares many different ways to create rich mathematical tasks that engage students in deep thinking: from the types of activities tasked to students, to how the students engage with a problem, to how groups are formed and what the optimal size of a working group should be. The Tait Staff has purchased a copy of 'Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics' for all interested teaching staff and has invested in ways to create or provide more white-board space in classrooms where students can work in groups to show their mathematical thinking.
